A nonstress test is a noninvasive procedure that monitors the fetus's heart rate, ensuring he or she is getting enough oxygen. It is called "nonstress" because stress is not placed on the fetus while testing. The nonstress test is easy and painless. The mother lies on her left side and two belts are placed around her stomach. One belt carries a device that records the fetal pulse rate (FHR) along with the other records contractions (if any). When the fetus moves or kicks, the fetal heart rate should increase by no less than 15 bpm (beats each minute) for a minimum of 15 seconds. If this happens a minimum of two times within a 20 minute period, the test is said to become reactive (normal). If the fetus won't move or the heart rate does not increase while moving, the nonstress test is considered to be nonreactive.
A nonreactive nonstress test will not necessarily mean it is abnormal. Many times, the fetus is asleep through the procedure. To encourage movement, the caretaker may be given something to consume or drink to awaken the fetus or even the person performing test may use a "buzzer" to stimulate movement. However, a nonreactive test could indicate the fetus is just not getting enough oxygen. Low levels of oxygen are often caused by issues with the umbilical cord or placenta. The health care provider may choose to perform additional tests (such as a contraction stress test or perhaps a biophysical profile) to determine if the fetus is in any immediate danger. If there is often a problem, a doctor may decide to induce labor or perform a Cesarean section (C-section).
A nonstress test can be achieved as early as 24 weeks of gestation but results might be inaccurate for the reason that fetus just isn't developed enough to react appropriately. Therefore, it can be generally done once the fetus is at the very least 28 weeks old.
